PEBAX MIDSOLE FOAMS : Pebax Powered by Arkema

What does Pebax stand for?Poly (amide-b-ether)Poly (amide-b-ether)or Pebax is a well-known copolymer consisting of flexible polyether segments (PEO) and the rigid amide blocks. Pebax® elastomers are world leading high tech polymers designed for extremely high performance sports wear. They are specified by many of the world's leading brands and relied upon by world record setting athletes. Many publications have referred to this technology as "technological doping" the new "arms race" of high performance sports. Some even describe polymers as "an unfair advantage".

UNRIVALED PERFORMANCE

Compared to other materials on the market like EVA or TPU, a special characteristic of Pebax® polymers is what is referred to as a "low energy loss" as seen in this hysteresis curve. This essentially means that when the polymer is stretched, it is highly efficient at storing and then returning that same energy when the stress is relaxed, for an explosive feeling at your feet ! Pebax Powered® shoes frequently take gold, silver and bronze and drive new innovations in the industry. For more informatin visit: https://pebaxpowered.arkema.com/en/

Adjustable Air Bladder in a Pebax Midsole: Benefits and Dynamics

As illustrated above, the heel design integrates an inflatable rubber bladder within a Pebax foam midsole. This air-filled bladder features a valve stem for fine-tuning its internal pressure, introducing a customizable element to cushioning that traditional foam-only midsoles lack. By embedding a pneumatic chamber in a high-rebound Pebax carrier, the shoe achieves a novel cushioning dynamic: compressible foam and pressurized air work in tandem to absorb impact and then spring back. The result is a heel unit with on-demand adjustability in softness or firmness, enhanced adaptability to different runners, and superior energy return compared to conventional EVA or PU foam setups.

Cushioning Dynamics Compared to Foam

Traditional Foam vs. Hybrid System: Standard EVA or PU foam midsoles compress under load and rely purely on the foam’s viscoelastic properties for shock absorption. In contrast, a Pebax-foam-plus-air system introduces a pneumatic spring effect. Upon heel strike, the air bladder compresses and its internal pressure rises, providing a progressively increasing resistance that prevents bottoming out. Unlike EVA (which dissipates much of the impact as heat), a pressurized air chamber stores impact energy and releases it during rebound. This means gas-based cushioning is more energy efficient than foam alone, delivering a snappier response with less hysteresis. The surrounding Pebax foam augments this by absorbing initial vibrations and then rebounding quickly, creating a smooth yet springy transition from impact to toe-off.

Adaptability and Tunable Cushioning

User-Adjustable Comfort: The bladder’s valve allows athletes to tune the heel pressure to their preference or body weight, altering the shoe’s firmness on the fly. Increasing the air pressure yields a firmer, more supportive heel (ideal for heavier runners or sprinting), while decreasing it results in plusher cushioning for comfort and slow runs. This adaptability means a single shoe can cater to various conditions and personal preferences – a feature not possible with one-density foam midsoles. Indeed, the air pressure can be adjusted based on a wearer’s weight and activities, providing custom shock absorption that foam alone cannot modulate. In dynamic use, the bladder adapts to each footstrike by compressing just enough to cushion, then re-inflating as the weight lifts, readying the system for the next impact.

Rebound Response and Energy Return

Pneumatic Spring Back: An air-filled bladder behaves like a resilient spring, boosting the rebound phase of the gait cycle. When compressed, the trapped air stores energy and then pushes back, contributing to propulsive toe-off. Pebax foam already delivers outstanding energy return by efficiently storing and releasing energy with each step, and the addition of a pressurized air unit amplifies this effect. Notably, in racing shoes that combine Pebax midsoles with air pods, the air components have been shown to deliver even more energy return than foam alone. In our context, the Pebax carrier and the heel air bladder act in synergy: the Pebax midsole’s elasticity helps snap the structure back to shape, while the air bladder’s spring-like expansion actively propels the heel upward. This dual rebound mechanism yields a bouncy, responsive ride – the runner experiences a noticeable “trampoline” effect as the system returns a higher fraction of energy than a traditional foam midsole could. The overall ride feel is one of heightened responsiveness and reduced energy loss, translating to improved running efficiency and a lively underfoot sensation.

Synergy of Pebax Carrier with the Bladder

Structural Support and Amplification: The Pebax midsole acts as a lightweight, high-rebound carrier that contains and guides the bladder’s deformation. Foam around the bladder provides critical lateral and torsional stability, ensuring the cushioning remains controlled even during off-center landings. (Pure gas bladders alone can be unstable under shear or angled loads, so the Pebax foam frames and supports the air unit.) The rigid-yet-resilient nature of Pebax means it deforms in a predictable manner with the bladder: it compresses slightly to absorb shock, then helps channel the air bladder’s expansion vertically for effective rebound. Moreover, Pebax’s low density and high energy return characteristics prevent it from dampening the air bladder’s effect – instead, it amplifies the rebound by adding its own spring-like response. The result is a harmonious integration where the Pebax foam and the adjustable air bladder together create a cushioning platform that is both adaptive and explosively responsive, far surpassing the performance of traditional foam midsoles in energy return, customizability, and overall ride dynamics. Benefits of Pharoh’s Adjustable Air Bladder vs. Nike Air Max

Personalized Comfort with Pharoh’s Adjustable Air Cushion

Pharoh’s adjustable air bladder pod is embedded in a springy Pebax foam midsole, giving you a tailor-made cushioning experience. This innovative heel pod lets you fine-tune how soft or bouncy your shoe feels underfoot for ultimate comfort. The premium version even includes a small CO2 cartridge and built-in pressure gauge, so you can pump up the heel air pod to your exact liking (just like inflating a bike tire but much simpler). If you prefer a no-fuss option, there’s also a model with a pre-inflated pod (no valve) that delivers great cushioning right out of the box.

Pharoh AACS (Adjustable Air Cushioning System) vs Nike Air: Custom Cushioning

Pharoh’s system stands out for its adaptability. Nike’s Air also uses air cushioning, but those air pockets come sealed and pre-set at the factory – you can’t change their firmness. In the Pharoh shoe, you control the cushioning: add a bit of air for a firmer, more supportive feel or release some for a softer, plusher ride. For everyday wearers, this means you can enjoy cloud-like softness when you want to relax or pump it up for a springier feel on an active day. Nike’s Air provides a reliably cushioned ride, but it’s one-size-fits-all – Pharoh’s system puts you in control of your comfort.

Carbon Fiber Plate Meets Foam, Air, and Lattice

Imagine a running shoe where every part of the cushioning system works together seamlessly. That’s what happens when you combine a full-length, flexible carbon fiber plate with Pharoh’s Pebax foam, an adjustable air bladder in the heel, and an interconnected TPU lattice in the forefoot. This design delivers a level of cushioning, responsiveness, and energy return that ordinary shoes can’t match.

At the core is the carbon fiber plate – a lightweight, springy layer running the shoe’s full length that acts like a lever to propel you forward faster with less effort. It also keeps the thick Pebax foam stable, so you get plush cushioning without sacrificing speed. Pharoh’s Pebax foam is ultra-light and resilient, providing superior cushioning and responsiveness to drive you ahead.

The heel’s adjustable air bladder lets you fine-tune the cushioning for soft, shock-absorbing landings. In the forefoot, an interconnected TPU lattice acts like a springy trampoline, compressing and rebounding to boost energy return and give a lively push-off. All these components work in harmony, delivering a ride that is cushioned, responsive, and full of energy – unlike anything else out there.

Interconnected TPU Lattice By Carbon3d

Here’s how Pharoh’s interconnected TPU lattice elevates cushioning and energy return in the forefoot of a Pebax midsole compared to conventional foam-only systems:

Overview of Interconnected TPU Lattice

Pharoh’s forefoot employs a three-dimensional network of TPU struts and nodes—an interconnected lattice—that deforms uniformly under load and then snaps back to shape on rebound. Unlike isolated air pods, this monolithic lattice ensures consistent load sharing across cells and eliminates seal-failure risks. Optimized lattice geometries have been shown to enhance energy absorption and return by up to 20% over solid foam, thanks to controlled buckling of TPU struts.

Integration within a Pebax Foam Midsole

Pharoh encapsulates the TPU lattice within a high-rebound Pebax carrier that provides structural support and lateral stability. On heel-to-toe transition, the lattice deforms under forefoot impact and stores strain energy; as the foot lifts, Pebax’s rapid foam rebound synergizes with the lattice’s spring-back, yielding a pronounced “trampoline” effect. Pebax’s low hysteresis amplifies the TPU lattice’s return, preserving more of the stored energy for forward propulsion rather than dissipating it as heat.

Maximizing Energy Return

When compressed, each TPU strut functions like a miniature spring; the interconnected network redistributes forces so that adjacent cells assist rebound, smoothing the response and reducing harsh “bottom-out” feel. Independent studies on 3D-printed midsoles confirm that lattice architectures deliver higher energy return coefficients than homogeneous foam, particularly when combined with elastomeric foams like Pebax.

Differentiation from Competitors

While many brands use simple apertures or carbon plates, Pharoh’s TPU lattice is fully enclosed in the Pebax matrix for superior durability under shear and bending. Competitor lattices (e.g., adidas 4D) often rely on rigid, closed-cell patterns that can feel abrupt; Pharoh’s strut-thickness tuning provides a graduated stiffness profile tuned to the forefoot’s biomechanics Carbon. Furthermore, Pharoh’s proprietary lattice cell topology—protected by its provisional patents—optimizes nodal valence and strut orientation for targeted cushioning and rebound in metatarsal zones, a refinement unseen in generic TPU-printed soles.

By embedding an adjustable, interconnected TPU lattice in a Pebax midsole, Pharoh combines the best of foam elasticity and lattice-based energy return, delivering a forefoot platform that is both supremely cushioned and explosively responsive.
